MG Motor South Africa this week joined the MG Car Club community at its annual Indaba, bringing together the famed British marque’s rich heritage, passionate enthusiast community and the next generation of MG vehicles destined for the South African market in a setting that was highly fitting to celebrate the brand’s legacy alongside its rapidly evolving product portfolio.
Classic MG vehicles took centre stage at the event’s Concours, showcasing the distinctive character and sporting heritage that have shaped the MG name for more than a century. After all: MG was born from a desire to make driving exciting; built to be felt and not just driven. Alongside these historic vehicles, MG Motor showcased its current product range, including the MG Cyberster – the car that best encapsulates the spirit of celebrating the marque’s powertrain performance and driving enjoyment DNA while demonstrating the future-focused approach to cutting-edge design and modern electric technology.
The event also allowed MG Motor to bring its future product plans closer to staunch brand supporters and the local automotive media. A select group of media were hosted for an exclusive showing of new MG products destined for South Africa during the coming month, providing an early glimpse into MG’s product portfolio expansion plans into new segments of the market.
“MG has an incredible heritage and a very passionate community of owners and enthusiasts in South Africa,” says Jack Wang, VP for Sales and Marketing at MG Motor South Africa. “This passionate spirit was born from MG’s storied past and maintained for decades. “The MG Car Club Indaba gave us a great opportunity to celebrate where the brand comes from while sharing our excitement for where MG is heading. Having the classic cars, our current models and our upcoming products together created a unique picture of MG’s journey and allowed us to bring owners and enthusiasts of classic MG vehicles closer to owners of MG today.”
MG’s passionate spirit is best demonstrated its rise to prominence in international motorsport in the 1950s and 1960s, which in turn transformed it into an icon of freedom in the 1970s and 1980s – a cultural symbol that signified style and youthfulness. This forms the basis of the connection between MG Motor South Africa and the MG Car Club, as the club represents generations of MG owners who have preserved some of the brand’s most iconic historic models to enthusiasts discovering the latest generation of MG vehicles. It’s an important link to the brand’s heritage as it continues to establish its modern presence in the South African market.
Since its official return to South Africa in January 2025, MG has introduced a growing portfolio of vehicles spanning hatchbacks, SUVs and performance models. The brand has placed a strong focus on combining distinctive design, technology, driving enjoyment and attainable refinement across its range, while drawing on the global resources and engineering capabilities of SAIC Motor.
The next phase of MG’s South African journey will see the arrival of further new models, expanding the brand’s presence across additional segments, including Hybrid and PHEV derivatives, giving South African customers more opportunities to experience the modern MG proposition.
“A fun and rewarding driving experience has been a fundamental part of every MG produced over the past century and is a part of our brand DNA that will remain a key differentiator of the brand in South Africa,” adds Wang. “As we embark on this exciting journey of introducing more exciting MG models to more South Africans, we believe that the engineering expertise that underpins our modern and often class-leading powertrain technology will attract more customers who value driving enjoyment and intelligent technology in equal measure to an undeniable value proposition.”
From celebrated classics to modern performance, technology and design, MG continues to build on a legendary heritage while creating an exciting future for the marque in South Africa.
