With their almost one-tonne payload, generous loading capacity, powerful turbo-diesel engines and advanced safety features, the LDV Terron 9 and T60 Max Pro were built to handle heavy loads, long hours behind the wheel, steep and winding hill climbs and many deliveries. So, it makes sense that Subtropico Market Agents, major official fresh fruit sponsor of the Comrades Marathon, chose these two vehicles to transport logistical supplies to stations along this year’s nearly 90 km route.

Fresh produce marketing company Subtropico Market Agents, connects South African growers with buyers across the country’s 13 national fresh produce markets. Marketing more than 200 varieties of fresh produce on behalf of over 6 000 producers, the company helps ensure fresh, quality produce reaches consumers every day.

At this year’s Comrades Marathon, held on 14 June, the theme “Why I Run” inspired Subtropico Market Agents to reflect on its own purpose: “Why We Do What We Do.” That purpose motivated the company’s involvement in this year’s ultramarathon. For Subtropico, this year’s Comrades Marathon wasn’t just about supporting a world-class sporting event. It was an opportunity to live their purpose nourishing thousands of runners while celebrating the people behind South African agriculture.

Both the LDV Terron 9 and T60 Max Pro played a key supporting role in Subtropico’s Comrades operation transporting the banding materials and supplies required to support the preparation process. “In an event of this scale, timing and efficiency are everything. The LDV vehicles ensured our team had the materials they needed, where they needed them, allowing us to prepare and support the process seamlessly,” says Bianca Hattingh, Marketing Executive at Subtropico Limited, headquartered in Pretoria. “It’s often the behind-the-scenes logistics that make a visible impact on race day, and the reliability and practicality of the LDV vehicles helped us deliver on our commitment to supporting thousands of Comrades runners”.

“We were proud to supply all the bananas and oranges provided to runners because we believe fresh produce fuels more than just performance, it fuels perseverance, determination and community. Every piece of fruit handed to a runner represented the dedication of South African growers and the collective effort of everyone who helps bring fresh produce from farm to finish line,” says Hattingh.

She says that these vehicles’ reliability, practicality and load-carrying capability were standout features, comfortably transporting the essential operational supplies needed. “Their dependable performance ensured everything arrived where it was needed, when it was needed, helping our team stay organised and prepared throughout the Comrades Marathon Expo and on the day of the race”.

“Being part of an event as iconic and demanding as the Comrades Marathon reflects more than logistics support. The strength, durability and versatility of both the Terron 9 and T60 Max Pro helped Subtropico deliver where it matters most – supporting thousands of athletes during one of the world’s most demanding ultramarathons,” says LDV South Africa CEO, Gerhard Moolman. “Congratulations to each and every participant, and to Subtropico for their commitment and support, and for trusting us with this incredible opportunity”.
