The Knysna Speed Festival, organisers of the Simola Hillclimb, have confirmed the tragic passing of seasoned competitor Pieter Joubert, who was involved in a fatal accident during the event.
Joubert was on his first run of the day during the King of the Hill segment when he lost control of his Lotus on a high-speed section of the course. Initial reports suggest that a mechanical failure may have caused the car to veer off track.
Emergency response teams, including medical, fire, and rescue personnel, responded immediately. Despite their swift efforts, Joubert was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are conducting a full investigation in line with required protocols for incidents of this nature.
The Knysna Speed Festival organisers are providing support to Pieter’s family, who were present at the event.
“We are exceptionally saddened this incident, and our thoughts and condolences are with Pieter’s family, team, and friends,” said Ian Shrosbree, Managing Director of the Knysna Speed Festival. “Pieter’s brothers, Dawie and Charl, who are also competitors, have expressed their wishes for the event to continue.”
Pieter Joubert will be remembered for his passion, sportsmanship, and contribution to motorsport in South Africa.
