Top Gear Names Hyundai IONIQ 5 N the 2023 Car of the Year

Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N, an electric hyper hatch, has taken the spotlight as the Car of the Year at the 2023 Awards, making a sensational debut since its unveiling at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July. The car, celebrated for its thrilling appeal to driving enthusiasts on both road and track, also serves as a groundbreaking technological blueprint for Hyundai N division’s electric vehicle (EV) future.

Fusing the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) from the standard IONIQ 5, the 2022 World Car of the Year, with N’s motorsport-inspired technologies, the high-performance model elevates driving enjoyment to unprecedented levels. The focus on delivering maximum excitement behind the wheel convinced TopGear’s expert judging panel to recognize it as the best car of the past 12 months.

Describing the IONIQ 5 N’s unique qualities, Top Gear writer and Car of the Year Juror, Paul Horrell, praised Hyundai’s engineering team for creating an EV that defies expectations. The car’s success marks the second time in three years that a Hyundai N vehicle has secured the prestigious Top Gear Car of the Year title, following the i20 N in 2021.

Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company, expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing Hyundai N’s dedication to innovation and customer satisfaction. The IONIQ 5 N showcases advancements such as a powerful powertrain, improved battery cooling, and enhanced braking performance.

Key technical highlights include electric motors capable of spinning at 21,000 RPM, delivering up to 478 kW with the N Grin Boost engaged. The car achieves 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 260 km/h on tracks. Upgrades to the steering column, Electronic Controlled Suspension, and intelligent software functions like N Pedal contribute to an exhilarating driving experience.

The IONIQ 5 N sets a new standard for emotional engagement in performance EVs, featuring N e-shift simulating an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and N Active Sound+ providing a compelling soundtrack.

This recognition from adds to Hyundai’s recent string of accolades, with the IONIQ 6 earning World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle, and World Car Design of the Year in April. Other models in Hyundai’s impressive product range have also received awards in various categories, further solidifying the brand’s commitment to delivering high-performance vehicles for all.
