Volkswagen Collaborates with DHL Express South Africa to Test ID.Buzz Cargo Fleet

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has joined forces with DHL Express for a six-month pilot test of the ID.Buzz Cargo fleet in South Africa. The test will see four ID.Buzz Cargo units stationed at DHL Express Service Centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, initiating in November.

The fleet deployment is part of DHL’s local pilot test, aligning with their global commitment to achieving zero emissions in logistics. The ID.Buzz Cargo vehicles will play a crucial role in specialized last-mile delivery services, contributing to DHL’s ambitious goal.

This strategic move by Volkswagen aligns with the electric vehicles strategy for the Volkswagen brand in South Africa, with the aim of raising awareness and gathering essential insights during the pilot test. The test fleet represents a significant step in Volkswagen Group South Africa’s plan to gradually introduce electric vehicles into the local market.

Thomas Milz, Director of Sales and Marketing at VWSA, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with DHL Express on the ID.Buzz Cargo test fleet is the initial phase of Volkswagen’s long-term plan to introduce electric vehicles in the local market gradually. By the end of the pilot test, we anticipate obtaining valuable information on the local market’s readiness for a commercial electric vehicle like the ID.Buzz Cargo. We are thrilled to partner with DHL, who shares our commitment to achieving zero emissions by 2050, in line with the Paris Climate Agreement.”

Jed Michaletos, MD of DHL Express South Africa, emphasized the company’s responsibility to lead in sustainability, saying, “As the world’s leading logistics company, we have a responsibility to set an example in our industry and be a sustainability leader. DHL Express has committed to achieving zero emissions by 2050 through various initiatives, including ensuring at least 60% electric vehicles for last-mile deliveries by 2030. We are excited to partner with VWSA to pilot their ID.Buzz in our South African operations.”
